Audio to Markdown on Mac: Offline Transcription for Obsidian and an Optional AI Summary

Turn a permitted recording into a reviewed Markdown transcript on Mac, add it to Obsidian, and choose separately whether a local or cloud AI may summarize the text.

The short answer

On a Mac with Apple silicon, M1 or newer, and macOS 15 or later, Alison Workspace can transcribe local audio or video on-device, add speaker labels and export Markdown. Review the transcript before adding the .md file to Obsidian. Summarizing it with another AI is a separate, optional step; Alison does not provide an automatic cloud-summary workflow.

Choose a local document workflow

Use file transcription when you need a reusable document rather than captions of audio playing now. Begin with a recording you may process and retain. Obsidian uses Markdown notes in a local vault. A cloud note service, synced folder or community plugin can introduce additional data handling, so choose the destination deliberately before exporting confidential text.

Prepare resources and a representative test

Open Alison’s file-transcription window, add the recording and verify its duration. Select the spoken language, download required recognition resources and enable speaker separation if needed. Prepare its resources too. Test a short authorized sample containing both speakers before processing a long interview. Offline processing begins after downloads; playback quality and overlapping voices still affect results.

Review words and speaker assignments independently

Replay the original audio while checking highlighted lines; English also supports word-level highlighting. Correct uncertain names, numbers and negatives. Confirm which generic label belongs to each voice before renaming speakers, and correct misassigned paragraphs separately. A fluent-looking transcript can still assign a correct sentence to the wrong person. Check the ending and processing status for partial results.

Export Markdown and place it in the vault

Choose Markdown in the transcript export controls and open the saved .md file to inspect its contents. Move or copy it into the intended Obsidian vault folder, or drag it into Obsidian’s file explorer. Keep an untouched reviewed transcript and create a separate working note for links and interpretation. This is file exchange, not an Alison–Obsidian integration.

Choose the summary destination separately

For a fully local workflow, use a locally configured model and verify that its interface, plugins and inference do not send the text elsewhere. If you choose a cloud AI, the pasted transcript leaves the local workflow and that service’s policies apply. Remove material you may not disclose. A local transcription step does not make a later cloud submission local.

Ask for a summary that can be checked

Ask the chosen AI to distinguish explicit statements, decisions and unresolved questions, preserve uncertainty and avoid inventing commitments. Compare important conclusions with the reviewed transcript and original recording. Store the generated summary as a derived note with its date and method. An AI summary is neither a verified transcript nor independent evidence that someone agreed to an action.

Keep exports, retention and purchase clear

Markdown suits editable notes; TXT is plain text, CSV supports tabular review, PDF suits reading, and SRT/VTT serve timed subtitles. Inspect each saved export rather than assuming identical formatting. Alison keeps text locally without an account; your chosen storage may sync it. New users receive 60 minutes of file transcription and 120 minutes of live captions; a one-time purchase is optional, with regional App Store pricing.

Frequently asked questions

Does Alison automatically summarize recordings in Obsidian?

No. Alison transcribes, edits, translates and exports text. You import Markdown yourself and separately choose whether another tool may summarize it.

Do I need to upload the audio?

The supported transcription workflow runs on the Mac after resources are downloaded. A later cloud-AI submission or synced export is a separate data transfer.

Can the Markdown contain reviewed speaker labels?

Enable file speaker separation, check assignments and rename labels before exporting. Inspect the actual Markdown output; labels are not verified identities.

Is a local model automatically private?

Verify its configuration, interface and plugins. Calling a workflow local does not establish that every connected component stays offline.

What if only part of the recording was processed?

Check completion status, processed length and remaining trial allowance before retrying. A partial transcript cannot support a complete-recording summary.

What Mac and language setup are required?

Use macOS 15 or later and Apple silicon, M1 or newer. Recognition and optional translation need their own downloaded resources and supported settings.
