No CC or a Desktop App? How to Choose Live Video Translation on Mac
On Mac, distinguish caption-track translation, AI subtitle generation and system-audio captions when a browser extension cannot handle your video or desktop app.

Start with the actual failure
On Mac, a missing CC track does not mean every subtitle extension is unable to help. Some generate subtitles from speech. First identify whether you have a caption-track problem, an unsupported player or audio outside the browser. Alison Workspace offers a local system-audio route on macOS 15 or later with Apple silicon M1 or newer, subject to accessible playback and supported languages.
Check native captions and the extension’s current tools
Use the player’s supplied captions or transcript first when they meet your needs. Immersive Translate currently advertises AI subtitle generation for videos without captions, as well as bilingual subtitle translation. Its help also describes caption-dependent workflows. Verify the specific platform, feature, plan and browser version instead of assuming all modes have the same requirements.
Separate browser audio from desktop playback
For browser video, check extension permissions, supported sites, selected subtitle language and a page refresh. Chrome also offers Live Caption and Live Translate on Mac; Google distinguishes local captioning from caption text sent for translation. A browser extension does not automatically attach to a separate desktop meeting client or player. Identify where the sound is actually playing before changing settings.
Set up a system-audio alternative
In Alison, choose system audio and allow macOS system-audio recording. Download the recognition and translation resources, set the spoken language and an available translation target, and start listening while the video plays. No caption file, browser extension or meeting bot is needed for this route. It recognizes accessible playback audio; it does not read the webpage, chat or subtitles burned into the picture.
Test the real playback path
Play one permitted minute containing ordinary speech, a name and a number using the actual browser or desktop app, headphones and output device. Close unrelated audio tabs. If original text appears but translation does not, inspect target resources; if neither appears, check sound, permissions and input selection. An embedded player or DRM restriction may still prevent capture; do not bypass access controls.
Keep bilingual text readable
Place the movable overlay away from player controls and enable click-through when you need to interact underneath it. Keep original and translated lines together to check uncertain wording. For your own spoken questions, choose microphone or both inputs only when needed. Each source can have separate languages; headphones help prevent duplicated playback entering the microphone. Sources are not individual speaker identities.
Choose live viewing or a subtitle deliverable
A live overlay helps you understand speech as it plays; it does not insert a caption track into the website or burn words into the video. For a local file you may process, use file transcription, review speaker labels and text, then export SRT, VTT, TXT, Markdown, CSV or PDF. Load subtitle files into the intended editor or player and check their timing.
Match privacy and payment to the job
Alison’s recognition and translation run on-device after resource downloads, without an account or audio upload. Local text history remains until deleted; later sharing or cloud-synced exports are separate decisions. The trial provides 120 live-caption minutes and 60 file-transcription minutes, with live time counted during subtitle production. A lifetime purchase is optional alongside subscriptions. No route guarantees error-free speech recognition or universal protected-video compatibility.

Frequently asked questions
Can Immersive Translate handle videos without CC?
Its current official product page describes AI subtitle generation. Check support and access for your exact video, browser and plan.
Do I need BlackHole or a subtitle file for Alison?
The documented system-audio route uses macOS audio capture and does not require a virtual audio driver or existing caption file. Test your setup.
Can it caption a desktop app?
It can recognize speech available through the Mac’s accessible system-audio path. Compatibility depends on the actual app and playback route.
Is all browser translation offline?
No. Google separates local Chrome captions from captions sent for translation. Review the chosen tool’s data flow and current settings.
Will other viewers receive my captions?
The overlay is personal. Screen sharing may expose it; it does not publish a subtitle track to everyone.
Can I trust the translation of every sentence?
No. Music, overlapping voices, accents and recognition errors affect translation. Check important names, numbers and instructions against the source.
