How to Translate a WhatsApp Call on Mac with Live Captions

Use WhatsApp’s Mac call controls first, then test system audio, microphone, or both in Alison Workspace for personal live captions and translation.

The short answer

WhatsApp for Mac supports voice and video calls. To add personal live text, first check WhatsApp’s current call controls and macOS Live Captions. If you need a separate translated caption layer, Alison Workspace can use Mac system audio, a selected microphone, or both. Whether a particular WhatsApp call exposes the audio you need depends on the Mac, client, permissions, and audio route, so test before relying on it.

Check WhatsApp and macOS options first

WhatsApp’s help explains Mac calling and the need for an audio output device and microphone. That does not guarantee a built-in translated-caption control for every call or language. Check the call window and macOS Accessibility settings for features available on your Mac; language and region coverage can vary. Keep the platform call itself working before troubleshooting a separate caption app.

Choose the audio source that matches the conversation

In Alison Workspace, select system audio to caption the sound WhatsApp plays through the Mac. Select a microphone to caption nearby speech picked up by the chosen input device. Choose both to display the two sources side by side; they can use separate recognition and translation language settings. The app does not join WhatsApp, access your account, or send a translated voice to the other caller.

Run a brief call test

Tell the other participant you want to test captions. Start with a short, non-sensitive call and one speaker at a time. For the remote voice, check system audio; for your own nearby voice, check the microphone; choose both only after each source works separately. Select the spoken language and target language independently, then confirm a clear sentence appears in the expected source and translation. Repeat the check with the headset or output device you plan to use.

Know the limits and protect the conversation

Alison Workspace requires macOS 15 or later on an Apple-silicon Mac (M1 or newer). Recognition and translation resources may need to be downloaded first; supported processing then runs on the Mac. The app does not save raw audio or screen frames, while local caption text remains until you delete it. If speakers overlap, room noise is high, or a headset changes the audio route, captions may be incomplete. Ask before captioning a call and verify important names, numbers, or decisions with the other person.

Frequently asked questions

Does WhatsApp for Mac provide translated call captions?

WhatsApp’s help documents Mac calls, but it does not establish a translated-caption option for every call, language, and version. Check the current call controls and test any separate caption workflow.

Can I caption both sides of the call?

You can choose system audio for sound played by the Mac, microphone for nearby speech, or both. Test the exact WhatsApp route with the other participant before relying on it.

Does Alison Workspace join the WhatsApp call?

No. It is a separate Mac app and does not join the call, sign in to WhatsApp, or send translated speech to the other person.

What Mac does Alison Workspace require?

macOS 15 or later on an Apple-silicon Mac with an M1 chip or newer. Intel Macs are not supported.

Are live captions and translations exact?

No. Noise, overlapping speech, accents, fast speech, and audio routing can affect results. Confirm important details in the conversation.
