The short answer
For a Mac workflow that keeps speech recognition and translation on-device, Alison Workspace provides live bilingual captions and offline file transcription after the required resources are downloaded. It requires macOS 15 or later and Apple silicon M1 or newer. Choose it for understanding speech and editing transcripts; it does not automatically write an AI meeting summary.
Granola is already bot-free
Granola’s official security page says its desktop app captures microphone and computer audio without a meeting bot. It uses cloud processing for transcription and AI summaries, does not store desktop meeting audio, and stores notes in a US-hosted AWS environment. Bot-free capture and on-device processing are different properties; compare the data flow your organization permits.
Choose the outcome before changing tools
Granola suits AI-enhanced notes, meeting search and shared workflows. Alison suits original-and-translated text while listening, local file transcripts and portable exports. Granola’s Basic plan lists limited history; paid plans list unlimited history. Check its current plan details. Switching tools does not automatically import your existing Granola notes or recreate recordings that were never retained.
Prepare a permitted short test
Download the recognition model and translation resources before going offline. In Alison, select system audio for remote speech, microphone for your voice, or both. Grant the corresponding macOS permissions. Select the spoken language and a supported translation target, then test a minute of a permitted call or recording. No Alison account is required; participants’ rules and consent still apply.
Keep the two input sources distinct
With both inputs selected, source labels distinguish microphone speech from Mac playback, and each source can use its own recognition and translation language. Wear headphones to reduce playback leaking into the microphone. Keep the original above its translation in the movable, resizable, click-through overlay. Source labels do not identify every remote participant separately.
Create a reviewed file transcript
For a recording you may process, import the local audio or video and enable speaker separation. Check assignments while playing the original; rename speakers and correct names, numbers and negations. Playback highlights the current line, with word-level highlighting for English. Export SRT, VTT, TXT, Markdown, CSV or PDF as needed. Automatic speaker labels still need review.
Decide separately whether to summarize
Alison keeps transcript text locally; the live workflow does not save raw audio. Review retained text and export destinations, including synced folders. For a summary, use a separately chosen local model or an approved service. Sending a transcript to cloud AI sends its text beyond the Mac; offline transcription does not make that later step local or create an integrated Granola replacement.
Check access and practical limits
The trial includes 120 minutes of live captions and 60 minutes of file transcription; the live timer runs while captions are produced. Subscription plans and an optional US$39.99 lifetime purchase are listed in the US App Store; regional prices may differ. Overlapping speech, missing resources and protected playback can limit results. Test your actual meeting app and verify important statements.

Frequently asked questions
Is Granola a meeting bot?
Its official desktop workflow is bot-free. The distinction here is cloud processing versus on-device captions and transcripts.
Does Alison generate meeting summaries?
It generates captions and editable transcripts, not automatic AI summaries. Summarization is a separate user-chosen step.
Can I use it without Internet?
Recognition and translation run locally after supported resources are installed. Your call, streaming service or initial resource download may still need Internet.
Does it separate every speaker live?
The live dual-source view labels microphone and system audio. File transcription provides separate speaker diarization; neither establishes verified identities.
Can I avoid a recurring subscription?
A lifetime purchase is optional alongside subscriptions. Check the current price and terms in your region’s App Store.
Does no bot mean no permission is needed?
No. Follow meeting, employer and participant rules for captioning, retaining and sharing conversation text.
