Otter.ai Alternative on Mac for Live Translation and On-Device Captions

Otter is built for meeting notes and summaries. If you need to understand a meeting in another language as it happens, or keep audio on your Mac, here is when an on-device alternative fits better.

The short answer

Most people search for an Otter.ai alternative for one of three reasons: they do not want a bot in the meeting, they need the meeting translated rather than just transcribed, or they do not want recordings stored in a cloud account. Otter has already addressed the first one. Its desktop app for Mac and Windows records without a bot, according to Otter's own desktop page.

The other two are a different job. Otter's strengths are notes, summaries, action items, search, and sharing in an Otter workspace. If your problem is that the meeting is in a language you do not fully follow, and you need to understand it while it happens, a live bilingual caption tool is the better fit. Alison Workspace shows each spoken line with a translation underneath, on your Mac, without an account, a bot, or uploading audio.

Use Otter if you need a record of the meeting. Use an on-device caption tool if you need to understand it in the moment. Some people need both.

What Otter does today

Otter's pricing page, checked October 14, 2026, describes a service built around meeting records:

  • Its Notetaker joins Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet to write and share notes automatically.
  • Automated summaries with action items and outlines, plus AI chat within and across meetings.
  • AI transcription in English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese, and Chinese.
  • A free Basic plan with 300 monthly transcription minutes, a 30-minute limit per conversation, and three lifetime audio or video file imports.
  • Pro listed at $16.99 per user per month billed monthly, with a lower rate when billed annually, raising limits to 1,200 minutes and 90 minutes per meeting.

The desktop page adds the bot-free option: Otter says you can record any conversation without a bot across Slack Huddles, Zoom, Google Meet, and in person. So if a visible bot was your only objection, try that first; you may not need to switch at all.

Where an Otter alternative makes sense

Three situations are not what Otter is designed for:

  • You need translation, not a transcript. Otter lists transcription in six languages. Its pricing page does not describe live translated captions into another language, so a colleague speaking Japanese or German still produces Japanese or German text. Check Otter's current features if translation matters to you.
  • The language is not on the list. Meetings in Korean, Portuguese, Italian, Arabic, Hindi, Vietnamese, Turkish, and many other languages fall outside those six.
  • You want nothing stored in a cloud account. Otter is an account-based service: meetings live in your workspace so they can be searched, summarized, and shared. That is the point of the product, but some people and some workplaces want audio and text to stay on the computer.

How Alison Workspace handles a meeting

Alison Workspace runs on the Mac and listens to the meeting audio your Mac is playing, whether the meeting is in the Zoom, Teams, or Slack app or in a browser. It does not join the call, and other participants do not see a bot. You choose the spoken language, or let Auto Detect follow it, and the language you want to read. Each line appears with the original on top and the translation underneath, in a floating window you can place beside the meeting.

According to its Mac App Store listing checked October 14, 2026, it recognizes 100 spoken languages, and translation targets come from the Apple language resources installed on your Mac, up to 21 on a current system. Recognition and translation run on the device. There is no account and no sign-up; audio is never uploaded or saved, and only text is kept in a local history you can search, export, or delete.

It can also caption your microphone, or the meeting audio and your microphone at the same time, labeled by source. For recordings, file transcription adds timestamps, automatic speaker separation, whole-transcript translation, and export to SRT, VTT, TXT, Markdown, CSV, or PDF.

Otter or Alison Workspace: an honest comparison

Choose Otter when:

  • You need summaries, action items, and searchable notes after the meeting.
  • You share transcripts with a team or connect them to tools such as a CRM.
  • The meeting is in a language you understand, and Otter supports it.
  • You want the same service on Windows, iPhone, or Android.

Choose Alison Workspace when:

  • You need to follow a meeting in another language while it is happening.
  • The language is not one Otter transcribes.
  • You want processing on your Mac without an account or uploaded audio.
  • You also want the same captions for videos, courses, and calls outside meetings.

What Alison Workspace does not do: it does not write meeting summaries or action items, it does not send captions to other participants, and it does not speak a translation aloud. It is a Mac app that requires macOS 15 or later and Apple silicon.

Try it on your next meeting

  1. Install Alison Workspace and allow system audio recording when macOS asks.
  2. Join the meeting in the Zoom, Teams, or Slack app, or in a browser, as usual.
  3. Set recognition to the language people are speaking, or use Auto Detect if the meeting switches languages.
  4. Set translation to the language you read best and keep the bilingual display.
  5. Place the subtitle window next to the meeting window, not over shared slides.
  6. If you want your own voice captioned as well, choose both sources and wear headphones so the microphone does not pick up the meeting audio.
  7. Add colleague names, product names, and acronyms to the custom dictionary before important meetings.

Before relying on it in a high-stakes meeting, test a short internal call and check that the language pair works on your Mac.

Consent, policy, and respectful use

Not having a bot in the call does not remove your obligations. Recording and transcription rules differ by country and workplace, and Otter itself is an account-based recording service. Alison Workspace does not save audio, but it does capture and display what is said, and it keeps text in a local history unless you delete it.

Follow your organization's rules for meeting tools, tell participants when your local rules require it, and do not use any caption tool in meetings where your company prohibits it. If you share your screen, check whether the subtitle window is visible to others before the meeting starts.

Costs side by side

Otter Basic is free with 300 transcription minutes a month and a 30-minute limit per conversation; paid plans add minutes and features. Alison Workspace gives new users 120 minutes of live captioning and 60 minutes of file transcription free; the US Mac App Store then lists Pro at $4.99 per month, $29.99 per year, or $39.99 as a one-time lifetime purchase. All prices were checked October 14, 2026 and vary by country and over time.

Frequently asked questions

Does Otter still need a bot to join my meeting?

Not necessarily. Otter's desktop app for Mac and Windows can record without a bot across Slack Huddles, Zoom, Google Meet, and in-person conversations, according to Otter's desktop page. Its Notetaker joins meetings only when you use that option.

Can Otter translate a meeting into another language live?

Otter's pricing page, checked October 14, 2026, lists AI transcription in English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese, and Chinese and does not describe live translated captions. Check Otter's current feature list if you need translation.

Does Alison Workspace write meeting summaries?

No. It shows live bilingual captions and keeps a local text history you can search and export. If you need summaries and action items, a notes service such as Otter is built for that.

Does Alison Workspace record the meeting?

No audio is recorded or uploaded. Only the recognized text is kept, in a local history on your Mac that you can export or delete.

Will other participants see that I am using it?

It does not join the call, so no bot appears. If you share your whole screen, the subtitle window may be visible, so check before you share.

Is Alison Workspace available on Windows or iPhone?

No. It is a Mac app that requires macOS 15 or later and a Mac with Apple silicon.

Can I use Otter and Alison Workspace together?

Yes. They do different jobs: one keeps a record and summary, the other helps you understand the meeting live. Follow your workplace's rules for both.
